Azúcar! News – Week of October 1, 2012

Monday is news day on the Azúcar! Blog. Here are your latest school updates and news from around the Ottawa salsa scene.

Our Teachers
This past weekend, Ali, Darnell and Marta were at the Quebec Salsa Festival, performing with Salsafanatics choreography troupes, and they brought back some great stories– don’t be shy to ask!

Note: many of our teachers are also part of other schools, either as students, teachers or dancers in choreo troupes. At Azúcar!, we believe in creating well-rounded dancers by exploring a variety of styles, so we encourage both our students and our teachers to check out all that the Ottawa salsa scene has to offer. Don’t be surprised if you see us promote other schools and dance troupes that our team is associated with!

The Studio
Our studio is now baffled (i.e. fitted with acoustic baffles to take away some of the echo) and mirrored. Our new glassless, shatterproof mirrors were delivered this week, so come check out your beautiful reflection!

What are glassless mirrors? They are made of thin, flexible plastic with a reflective coating, and stretched over a frame. Their optical quality is incredible, but they are fairly fragile, so we encourage you to admire your reflection without touching the mirrors.

Most of our classes are continuing as scheduled, but there have been a few changes:

Salsa: Intermediate classes are on hold until we have enough student interest at this level to warrant a group class. If you are interested in these classes, email us at In the meantime, the Tuesday (7pm to 8pm) slot will be open for free practice.

Emilie Phaneuf’s special Reggaeton workshop is going ahead, and the first of 10 classes is taking place tomorrow evening from 8 to 9pm. The Ladies’ Styling class, unfortunately, is cancelled for now, but if you’re interested in it, email us and we’ll try our best to reschedule it.

Check out our complete class schedule at

Studio Socials
Our FREE studio socials are on every Tuesday and Wednesday, 9pm to 10:15pm, so bring your friends and let’s make it a great party!
